Global crude steel production rose by 2.9% year-on-year in March 2025, reaching 166.1 million metric tons (mt), according to the World Steel Association (worldsteel).
Despite the monthly rise, total production for the first quarter of 2025 edged down slightly by 0.4% compared to the same period last year, totaling 468.6 million mt.
Regional Breakdown – March 2025:
Asia: Output climbed to 123.6 million mt, up 3.9% year-on-year.
China led the region with 92.8 million mt, up 4.6%.
India produced 13.8 million mt, a 7% increase.
Japan saw a modest 0.2% rise to 7.2 million mt.
South Korea experienced a 5.3% decline, producing 5.0 million mt.
European Union (EU-27): Production in March stood at 11.7 million mt, a slight 0.2% year-on-year increase.
Germany, however, saw a sharp drop of 11.7%, producing 3.1 million mt.
Turkey: Output fell 2.8% year-on-year to 3.1 million mt.
CIS Countries: Total production declined 3.5% to 7.1 million mt.
Russia’s estimated share was 6.2 million mt, down 3.2%.
North America: Regional production reached 9.2 million mt, up 1.4%.
United States output dipped 1.5% to 6.7 million mt.
South America: Output increased by 6.5% to 3.7 million mt.
Brazil contributed 2.9 million mt, up 6.6%.
Africa: Produced 1.9 million mt, a 0.6% increase year-on-year.
Middle East: Output rose 1.9%, totaling 5.3 million mt.
